Holling Hoodhood is the only Presbyterian in the seventh grade, so he has to stay in a classroom with Mrs.Baker Wednesday afternoons while the other students attend Catholic and Jewish religion instruction. Holling’s pretty sure Mrs. Baker hates his guts. You’ll have to decide for yourself after she introduces Holling to the New York Yankees, makes a deal that saves his friend’s father’s architectural firm and coaches Holling in cross-country until he makes varsity.
But I wonder, could any teacher be this wonderful? Could any person be this wonderful?
This book is a 2007 Newbery Honor recipient, but what makes it really worthwhile is its incredible, surprising characters.
