Inning One. "Our game: 1840s-1900." In New York City, in the 1840s, people need a diversion from the "railroad pace" at which they work and live. They find it in a game of questionable origins. On June 19, 1846, at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey, a team of well dressed gentlemen, the Knickerbockers, play the first game of baseball.  By 1856, the game is already being called "the national pastime," or simply, "our game." Inning Two. "Something like a war: 1900-1910." It is a decade of revolution. In China. In Central America. At Kitty Hawk. In Henry Ford's factory. And on America's baseball fields. In 1900, he changes it names to the American League and begins talking about challenging the big city monopoly held by the National League.  The revolution takes only three years. Baseball was transformed into a game of power hitters, and none was more important to baseball and American life than Babe Ruth, the turbulent son of a Baltimore saloon keeper. In 1921, a Pittsburgh radio station broadcasts the first game of Major League baseball. Pitcher Andrew "Rube" Foster forms the Negro National League whose eight teams draw over 400,000 fans by 1923. By the late 1920s, a growing number of Negro leagues, like their white counterparts, are traveling throughout the country, inspiring a new generation of players; St. Louis Cardinals' general manager, Branch Rickey, develops baseball's first farm system; Babe Ruth hits 60 home runs in a season; Grover Cleveland Alexander's performs 7th game heroics in the 1926 World Series and Lou Gehrig makes his debut. Inning Five. "Shadow ball: 1930-1940." As baseball struggles through the Depression, owners struggle to fill their stadiums by introducing night baseball and the Hall of Fame, but nothing seems to work.  Meanwhile, the Negroe leagues, like a parallel world are filled with gifted athletes like Josh Gibson, "Cool Papa" Bell and Satchel Paige. Babe Ruth's fading career gives way to the rising stars of Joe DiMaggio, Hank Greenberg and Bob Feller. This episode culminates with one of the great showdowns in baseball history when Satchel Paige, arguably the best pitcher ever, pitches to Josh Gibson, "The Black Babe Ruth," in the Negro League World Series. Inning Six. "National pastime: 1940-1950." This episode focuses on the season of 1941 when Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 straight games (the longest streak before or since), Ted Williams became the last player to bat 400, and the Brooklyn Dodgers won their first pennant in 20 years. Then WWII intervenes and baseball's best players become soldiers. Branch Rickey integrates the Major Leagues on April 15, 1947, when heroic Jackie Robinson takes the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The game finally becomes what it had always claimed to be: "the national pastime." MPAA Rating NR.  149 minutes.

Inning Seven. "Capital of baseball: 1950-1960." Focuses on the glorious heyday of New York City baseball, where for 10 straight years, a local team played in the World Series and almost always won. Includes Bobby Thompson's home run off Ralph Branca in 1951, Willie Mays's incredible catch in the 1954 World Series, and the switch hitting slugger Mickey Mantle. In the mid 1950s, baseball is at its zenith, but as the decade wanes, white fans flee to the suburbs and  move to the Sunbelt City. Sparked by Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella, the Brooklyn Dodgers finally win their first World Series only to know, just two years later, the ultimate heartbreaks as their team moves to Los Angeles. Inning Eight. "A whole new ball game: 1960-1970." Signalling the beginning of the end of the New York Yankees dynasty, Pittsburgh's Bill Mazeroski wins the 1960 World Series with a home run in the last inning of the last game. In the following season Roger Maris breaks Babe Ruth's record of 61 home runs; pitcher Sandy Koufax dominates most of the decade and Casey Stengal manages the the Mets, a motley mix of players known for their ineptitude. In 1967, the Boston Red Sox take the American League pennant but lose the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals. During this decade the game is about to be radically transformed by the first successful attempt by baseball players to organize into a union while Curt Flood's attempt to escape the Reserve Clause is doomed to failure. Baseball: Part 9.
Inning Nine. "Home: 1970-present." By 1970, the national pastime is in trouble in spite of great performances by Brooks Robinson, Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron, who breaks Babe Ruth's lifetime record of 714 home runs. Attendance figures lag in ball parks across the country, but game six of the 1975 World Series, thought to be the greatest game ever played, reawakens a whole country's love for the game. Free agency, with its enormous salaries and dislocations, threatens America's affection for the game. Nevertheless, baseball becomes more competitive than ever, and when the Toronto Blue Jays win in 1992, the games becomes truly international .  The series ends with a retrospective of the game and its place in American history. William Randolph Hearst, the powerful newspaper magnate, was portrayed in Citizen Kane, an Orson Welles film. Hearst's reaction upon learning about the film was to work to destroy Welles and suppress the film.  Pressured by Heart, major movie chains refused to carry Citizen Kane and Welle's greatest masterpiece virtually disappeared for almost 25 years.
