accomplishments of others. Byrd became an international hero after he claimed to
have made the first flight over the North Pole. But some questioned whether he had

AMERICA AND THE HOLOCAUST: DECEIT AND
INDIFFERENCE (THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE - PBS) - 1993 Rated
NR 90 MIN
Beginning with the tragic events of Kristallnacht in 1938 and extending through the
liberation of the death camps in 1945, "America and the Holocaust" explores the
painful and difficult story of America's response to the murder of six million Jews by the
Nazis and their collaborators. Using interviews, archival photos and documents, and
home movies and film from the time, the program traces the tragic story of America's
inaction on two levels: through the experiences of Kurt Klein, a Jewish refugee
trying to save his parents, and through documented evidence of the U.S. government's
official policy. As early as 1942, validated stories of the Nazi campaign to
exterminate the Jews surfaced in Washington. Yet a "paper wall" of
bureaucratic red tape and an isolationist and anti-Semitic political climate obstructed
the emigration of Jewish refugees. When a coalition of forces led by Robert
Morganthau and Will Rogers, Jr. forced President Roosevelt to recognize the crisis and to
act, the War Refugee Board was finally created in 1944. While it was able to save
200,000 lives, it was too little, too late for many Jewish refugees including Kurt Klein's
parents.

The month-long Battle of the Bulge was the single biggest and bloodiest battle American
soldiers ever fought. With attention focused on crossing the Rhine, the Allies were
unprepared for the 30 German divisions that roared across an 85-mile Allied front on
December 16, 1944. The assault was a complete surprise. In August of 1944, it
looked as if the road to Berlin ran downhill. Paris was liberated; Allied forces
would easily overrun the Wehrmacht; the war in Europe was coming to an end. Rumors
started circulating that soldiers would be back home for Christmas. Meanwhile,
Hitler was mounting plans for his final gamble. The American command did not
immediately grasp that this was a major German counteroffensive. By Christmas, the
German Offensive had opened a bulge some 50 miles into the Allied lines, forcing the
biggest mass surrender of American soldiers since Bataan. Eisenhower decided this
was the Allies' chance to lop off entire divisions of the German army and hasten the end
of the war. More than 80,000 American were killed, maimed or capture in the battle
It was an infernal test of courage and endurance. The program looks at the

CIVIL WAR (1861 The Cause) Volume 1 - 1990
Rated NR 99 MIN
"No day ever dawns for the slave," a free black man once wrote.
"It is all night. All night, forever." The episode opens with an
indictment of slavery and dramatically evokes the background of the war. Here is the
Cotton Kingdom of the South, the passion for states' rights and the fierce determination
to preserve the Union. We meet the abolitionist Frederick Douglas, South Carolina's
unyielding John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln, whose election in 1860 drove six Southern
states to secede.
The Nation witnesses the inauguration of two rival presidents in 1861: the opening
guns at Fort Sumter; the Union debacle at Bull Run. The commanders and
ordinary soldiers march on state - along with the diarists who will put it in perspective.
It is Mary Boykin Chesnut, of Charleston, who writes, "We are divorced now,
North from South, because we hated each other so."
The Civil War, is the first full-scale documentary of the conflict that cost 620,000 lives
and redefined the meaning of freedom in America.

It is eight months after Bull Run, and 1,000,000 men are massing along a 1,000-mile front.
Washington is a madhouse with hordes of opportunists jostling for advantage -
"too many pigs for the teats," Lincoln observes dryly.
General George McClellan, an able organizer but hesitant warrior, slowly leads his huge
Army of the Potomac up the Virginia Peninsula toward the Confederate capital of Richmond.
But when he encounters only a tiny Confederate force he doesn't fight, he halts and
digs in; even Lincoln cannot budge him. To the West, however, a different sort of
general, Ulysses S. Grant, meets the South's Albert S. Johnston in a battle called Shiloh:
a Hebrew word meaning "place of peace". For two days 100,000 men
slam viciously into each other. At the end, the Union holds the field, and 23,000
soldiers have fallen: the same losses was Waterloo. And there are another 20
Waterloos to come.

and at morning call, the sound of coughing drowns out the roll of drums.
Yet the struggle goes on. Robert E. Lee, at his most brilliant, devastates a vastly

price of these victories is costly to the South as well. Thousands of men are dead,
and resources are strained. At Vicksburg on the Mississippi, Ulysses S. Grant and
his troops lay siege to the rebel stronghold, slowly throttling the South's lifeline.
Meanwhile, General Lee prepares to invade Maryland and Pennsylvania, thereby

Summer, 1863. After the spring's great victories and feeling his Army invincible,
Lee drives north again with 73,000 men. He meets 90,000 Federals at the small
Pennsylvania farming town of Gettysburg. And for three of the most crucial days of
the war, the two armies are locked in what one Massachusetts private terms "a perfect
hell on earth;" 51,000 men fall, one in every three, and when the firing dies,
Lee is in retreat, never again to threaten the North.
Meanwhile, in the West, Grant seizes Vicksburg and the Rebels are soundly defeated in
Tennessee. The first military draft provokes a series of bloody anti-war, anti-black

CIVIL WAR (1864 Most Hallowed
Ground) Volume 7 - 1990 Rated NR 72 MIN
The summer of 1864 is the north's darkest hour. Washington is panic-stricken when
Jubal Early boldly attacks the outskirts of the city. To the south, Confederate
cavalry commander Nathan Bedford Forrest, the "wizard of the saddle," slashes at
William Tecumseh Sherman's supply lines, slowing his approach to Atlanta. Meanwhile
at Petersburg, U.S. Grant's siege drags on with no end in sight.
In the North, public opinion turns strongly against Lincoln and the war. That fall
the presidential campaign sets Lincoln against his old commanding general, George
McClellan, now the Democrat's "peace" candidate. Even Lincoln believes his
reelection unlikely but dramatic eleventh hour Union victories at Mobile Bay, Atlanta, and
the Shenandoah Valley changed the odds. Lincoln wins in a land-slide and the
Confederacy's last hope for the independence dies.

CIVIL WAR (1865 The
Better Angels of Our Nature) Volume 9 - 1990 Rated NR 70 MIN
At Lee's surrender, church bells peal throughout the North. The South is in ruin and
despair. Unable to accept that the war is over, the actor John Wilkes Booth steals
into a Washington theater and puts a bullet into the brain of Abraham Lincoln. The
nation's grief knows no bounds; even Southerners are appalled, and gradually the isolated
fighting stutters to and end. The war is over. It is time to rebuild, "to
listen," as Lincoln implored the nation four years before, "to the better angels
of our nature."
The episode recounts the fates of Jefferson Davis and Robert E.Lee, of Ulysses S. Grant
and William Tecumseh Sherman, of the many players, great and small, in the enormous drama.
It includes a poignant scene. In 1913, on the 50th anniversary of the Battle
of Gettysburg, during a reenactment of Pickett's Charge, the survivors in blue and gray
burst from their ranks to embrace one another. It was, says Joshua Lawrence
Chamberlain, a Union hero of Gettysburg, " a transcendental experience. A
radiant fellowship of the fallen.
